acupuncture moxibustion

Moxibustion is the burning of the dried leaves of a herb commonly known as Mugwort (the botanical name is Artemesia vulgaris). It comes in various forms: Loose herb, which is slowly smouldered in a special box called a ‘moxa box’, small compact cones that may be placed over a slice of ginger, garlic, or a bed of salt, depending on the condition being treated. Also commonly used are rolled sticks of the herb that are either held near the skin, the needle in situ, or physically attached to the needle.

Moxa therapy feels lovely. It creates a gentle warmth, and when used appropriately, enhances the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. It encourages the movement of qi and assists in resolving blockage or stagnation. It does have quite a strong odour. While not unpleasant, it may aggravate very sensitive people or those with allergies.
