What to expect at your first treatment.

Acupuncture first treatment

At your first treatment there will be a lot of talking! We’ll want details about your current complaint and your overall health. We’ll want some information about your eating habits and your appetite, your energy, your sleep, and other stuff like that. We’re also going to ask you about your bowel movements and menstruation (if relevant). We talk about this sort of thing all the time, it’s really not embarrasing once you get used to it!

Once all the chatting is done, we will take a look at your tongue, and feel the pulse at your wrist. Depending on what you’ve come in for, we might want to feel different points on your tummy, back, or along your limbs.

Then comes treatment! You lay or sit comfortably, and then we insert very fine needles into points on various parts of your body specifically chosen for your complaint. It’s not uncommon that a point is chosen that’s nowhere near the problem. For example, if you’re complaining about a sore shoulder, local points on the shoulder will probably be used in combination with others that may seem irrelevant to you. This is normal.

The needles are usually left in place for around 20 mins, during which time the therapist might do a little massage, apply some moxa, some cupping, gua sha, or just leave you to relax and let the needles do their work.

A typical treatment goes for about one hour. Frequency of treatments varies a lot depending on your condition. Detailed treatment plans can be discussed with your practitioner.
